On Thin Ice
“Cody STOP!” I scream as my dog came sprinting towards me.
I put my hands out in front of me to stop him, but my mind went blank and the world went dark.
It all started after school one day. I got off the bus and noticed my house looked like a winter wonderland. My feet slipped as I ran across the driveway. When I got down the driveway I galloped inside the garage, threw on my snow pants and a coat. I popped into the door and called to my mom, “MOM!! I am going to play in the snow!”
“O----,” she called back, but got interrupted by me slamming the door.
I dashed outside and started to lose my balance!
“COOL! It’s ICE” I thought to myself. I sat on the ground and started to push myself across the lawn. I got to a hill and rolled over on my stomach and… ZOOM! I went speeding down the hill. At the bottom of the slope I plopped onto my back and started to spin.
“WEEE!” I shouted.
I started to stand up, but I slipped and fell on my bum. WOOPS! Finally I got up and sluggishly walked over to the swing-set. I grabbed on to the bridge connecting the main platform to the club-house. I had a firm grip on the bridge, but that grip started to slack. I saw that Cody was dashing around me in circles. I started to giggle, but that giggling hit a hard stop. My face turned cold. My eyes grew big with fear. Every time he circled me he got faster and faster. I noticed that he had started to charge at me.
I screamed at him, “STOP!!” But that doesn’t stop a dog like him.
He galloped around the back of me. I couldn’t see him. It felt like I was in a horror movie and I couldn’t see where the killer was. All of a sudden I heard a scratching sound on the ice like a needle scratching on a record. My mind went blank. My vision was blurry. The world was spinning around me. I couldn’t hear anything. I started to fall backwards. Cody ran out from behind my legs. He knocked both of my legs out from underneath me. I landed on my back. Tears wanting to come out, but stayed in like frozen rain. I was laying there for about ten minuets and finally dozed off. I started hallucinating that a boot camp instructor was yelling at me. He was screaming, “ARE YOU GOING TO LET A FALL STOP YOU FROM GETTING UP?”
I replied, “Umm no?”
“I CAN’T HEAR YOU!!”
“NO!”
“SAY IT ONE MORE TIME!!”
“I will NOT let a FALL stop ME!!”
“Okay you can wake up now. I’m done with your pep talk.”
I woke up slowly and painfully. I lifted my head. Then my back cracked. I fell back down. My hair is now frost.
I couldn’t stop thinking, “I CAN DO THIS!”
I stood up slowly, but made it to my knees and stopped there. Slowly, I lifted up my right leg. Following was the left leg. I stood up and dug my heels into the ground and started walking towards the hill. I finally reached the hill. Climbing up it felt like I was climbing up Mount. Everest. I got to the top and collapsed onto my stomach. My hands helped me slide across the lawn to the door. When I made it to the front door I shouted, “That dog is on THIN ICE!”
